Construction Students Make ‘Theatre Debut’ designing props for Local Musical

Bucks UTC Sixth Form Construction students recently made their ‘theatre debut’, with a community-based project which saw them design and construct 60 wooden sword props for Buckingham Park Primary School pupils to use in the musical piece, ‘Play on Words’, shown at Aylesbury’s Waterside Theatre on November 1st.

The Musical

Over 90 Buckingham Park pupils in Years 4 and 5 participated in a collaborative item known as the ‘Energy Festival’ which has seen over 900 of Bucks’ school pupils participating.  ‘Play on Words’ was written by local music teacher Jane Smith, and tells the story of school children discovering the joy of poetry.  The swords were used by Buckingham Park’s Year 4 children who provided the dance for the song based on the poem, ‘The Charge of the Light Brigade’.

“We’re really grateful for the support of Bucks UTC in preparing 60 replica swords for our performance of ‘The Charge of the Light Brigade’ at the Waterside Theatre.  It is fantastic to know that our children were well equipped for ‘battle’ and that the students at Bucks UTC were able to use their skills and expertise to support our school. We look forward to further collaborative projects in partnership.” – Nick Waldron, Buckingham Park Primary School.

“The construction students and I were very pleased to have been able to support Buckingham Schools production. I gave our students a specific brief to minimise costs and they easily achieved this. Using off cuts of timber we only had to spend £3.00 for the twine, 5 pence per sword – a bargain! If any other organisations have projects that they feel we could support them with, please do not hesitate to contact me at nhan@buckinghamshireutc.co.uk.” – Nicholas Han, Head of Construction at Bucks UTC.

About Energize Festival

Energize is a successful festival provided by the Bucks Area Education Alliance that started over 20 years ago at the Swan Theatre in High Wycombe. The Energize Committee have long wanted to bring their work to the Waterside Theatre so that the children of Aylesbury Town could share in the magic of taking part in the performing arts on a professional stage. The festival is a combination of individual school performances, coupled with the collaboration of many schools coming together to create a larger piece of work incorporating dance, music and drama.

 Bucks UTC & The Community

At Bucks UTC we engage with the community, putting our students’ technical skills into practice. We frequently run projects to support local charities and other causes, giving our students further opportunity to test themselves whilst providing value to those we work with. If you know of any community-based projects that you feel will interest our students, please feel free to get in touch.
