Construction Students Experience Working On Site With BAM

Four of Bucks UTC’s construction students have discovered what it’s like to work on site, following a week’s work experience with contractor BAM on its Kings Cross and Milton Keynes projects.

To secure a place on the programme, the UTC students submitted CVs and personal statements and were interviewed by BAM’s Education and Community Co-ordinator. BAM originally proposed two work placements but were so impressed by all four students, that they offered them all the opportunity!

Guy Milton, Senior Site Manager for BAM, Kings Cross said: “We like to give something back at BAM and were impressed with the Bucks UTC students. They were punctual, polite and mature for their age. Above all they were ready to learn and got involved with our management team as soon as they arrived.”

The students’ time on site included understanding the various roles in a construction team as they rotated between the various disciplines – Project Management, Health & Safety, Quantity Surveying, Design Management and Planning. Through the activities completed during their week, such as a mock health and safety test and site induction, the students also gained their Level 1 ‘Employer Ownership of Skills Work Experience’ qualification.

Nick Han, Head of Construction at Bucks UTC added: “It’s hugely important for our students to get out of the classroom and see the working environment they will enter when they finish their studies. The fact that BAM constructed our UTC building also adds to their knowledge of the finished product!”

Through its Community Engagement programme, BAM is committed to working with students, giving opportunities to experience construction and gain a wider understanding of the construction industry. The company remains a key partner in Bucks UTC through a number of activities such as Continuing Professional Development sessions for teachers, site visits and providing guest speakers.
